Craze Lines—The Cosmetic Tooth Cracks

When you think of a cracked tooth, you might automatically wince, considering the pain that tooth damage is typically associated with. Yet, like most dental issues, even cracks can occur to degrees, and in minor cases, you might not even know they are there until you see them. Cosmetic tooth cracks, or craze lines, affect only the outer layer of your teeth, called the enamel, and don’t necessarily pose a threat to your dental health. Therefore, craze lines can be corrected with minor cosmetic dental treatment, improving your smile without the need for a dental crown or other, more complex, restorative treatment.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

The enamel that surrounds your teeth is made of a highly-resilient, but nearly-translucent, layer of mineral crystals that protects the bulk of your teeth from damage and infection. When the enamel develops minor cracks, usually due to excessive pressure (like from teeth grinding), then plaque, food particles, and traces of beverages can accumulate in the craze lines. While they may not be noticeable at first, the cosmetic cracks will become increasingly more obvious as debris collects in them, lending the appearance of slight cracks and fractures in your teeth.

How Do You Fix Craze Lines?

When a tooth is cracked all the way to its main structure, it will likely need a dental crown, which mimics the top part of the tooth, and is placed over it to protect it. When craze lines occur, however, they are limited to the tooth’s mineral layer, and may remain invisible if you keep your teeth clean with good hygiene and regular dental cleanings. If they begin to affect your teeth’s appearance, then we may recommend a professional teeth whitening procedure to erase the stains, or cosmetic dental bonding, depending on your specific needs.
