Milford Cosmetic Dentist: Gum Recession with Age

As Americans, we all live in a society filled with people that continue to live longer and longer with each passing year. Studies show that the number of centenarians continues to increase. Living more than 100 years might seem difficult, but many people will find themselves living close to a full century. As people age, many medical ailments can affect them functionally and cosmetically. One cosmetic issue associated with aging: gum recession. Your Milford cosmetic dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner, discusses how recession occurs with age.

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs due to numerous factors including aging. In fact, the old saying, “long in the tooth” refers to people whom lived long enough for their gums to recede. When gums recede, teeth often appear long and overgrown. Gum recession exposes tooth roots which previously resided below the gumline. Tooth roots cannot withstand the barrage of attacks from oral bacteria and food substances people consume.

Unlike the top of teeth, the bottom does not contain a large amount of tooth enamel. Protective enamel aids in protecting underlying layers of teeth from acid attacks and other harmful oral conditions. When gum recession occurs, people often find that their teeth become loose. Gums provide necessary support to teeth, so eventual tooth loss could occur. Studies show that nearly 50% of American adults will lose a tooth at some point.

How to Maintain Gums

Many people remain unaware that how they brush and what kind of toothbrush they use can impact the rate at which gums recede. Brushing with traditional, hard-bristled toothbrushes can scrub away gum tissue. We recommend that patient switch to an electric toothbrush and gently brush around the gumline. Additionally, acidic beverages like soft drinks or energy drinks can all pose a threat to gum retention. Limit your intake of harsh, acidic beverages to aid in promoting gum health and tooth health.
