Milford Cosmetic Dentist: Small Changes Can Have Dramatic Results

Thanks to reality television and our national obsession with spectacular makeovers, many people assume that going in for cosmetic dentistry means undergoing major, invasive procedures. While some patients have significant problems that do require a great deal of restorative, orthodontic, and cosmetic work, the vast majority of people can greatly improve the appearance of their smiles with just a few, minor procedures. Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner, an experienced Milford cosmetic dentist, discusses some of these more conservative treatments.

Brighter Smiles with Teeth Whitening

As you age, your enamel begins to look dull and yellowish. Most often, this results from the accumulation of trace stains from the foods and beverages you consume although some lifestyle factors, such as chewing or smoking tobacco will also discolor your teeth. A professionally administered whitening treatment can turn the clock back on your smile. Most cosmetic dentists offer two kinds of whitening treatments:

  • In-Office Whitening: The dentist or hygienist applies a special bleaching gel to your teeth and then exposes the gel to ultraviolet light to activate the whitening agents. They repeat this process a few more times until your teeth reach the desired shade. In-office whitening will brighten teeth up to 10 shades in a little over an hour.
  • At-Home Whitening: Your dentist will send you home with a set of custom-fitted trays and a supply of whitening gel. At home, you simply fill the trays with the gel, slip them over your teeth, and wear them for a predetermined period of time every day. In a week to 10 days, your teeth will look younger and brighter.

Correcting Flaws with Dental Bonding

Composite resin is a high-tech, plastic based material your dentist uses to fill in cavities. In the hands of a skilled cosmetic dentist, resin can be used to correct a wide variety of smile imperfections such as:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Uneven or misshaped teeth
  • Fill in gaps between teeth
  • Mask discolorations that do not respond to whitening treatments, such as tetracycline stains

During this procedure, the dentist applies several layers of resin and, after it has hardened, shapes and polishes it until the ideal tooth shape is reached.
