Milford Dentist: Make Your Partial Denture Feel Like Natural Teeth

A partial denture can do a lot for your smile and your daily life. By filling in the gaps in your teeth, a partial denture can protect your remaining teeth and give you the confidence to show off your smile. However, patients sometimes complain about the way partial dentures feel. They find the feel uncomfortable or unnatural. Therefore, you may consider getting your partial denture supported with dental implants. To learn more about this procedure and how it yields a more natural feel, read the explanation below from your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a restorative device used by dentists to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are often used in single-tooth restorations. When used in this way, a dental implant’s three parts are the post, the crown, and the abutment. The post of the implant is surgically inserted into the jaw, and the jawbone heals around it, creating a stable base to which the crown can attach. In order to attach to the post, however, the abutment (a connecting piece) must be used.

Dental Implants and Partial Dentures

Although dental implants are often used for single-tooth restorations, they are by no means limited to them. Dental implants can support many prosthetic devices including dental bridges, partial dentures, and even full dentures. When supporting a partial denture, multiple implants may be inserted into the jaw at strategic points that will serve as anchors for the partial denture. Once the jawbone has healed around the implants, the partial denture can be attached, and because the stability stems from the jawbone itself rather than the surrounding teeth, the prosthetic teeth tend to feel more natural and secure.
