Milford Dentist Discusses Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Teething can be a tough time for parents and for their children. But aside from the obvious struggles, teething marks the beginning of many types of dental care for your child. Here to walk you through these beginning stages of your child’s oral health is your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner. He explains what you can expect from your child’s first dental visit.

The First Dental Visit

Your child should attend a dental visit as soon as his or her first tooth erupts. During these early visits, cleanings may not be the main focus. Instead, they provide parents and their children great opportunities to get comfortable with the dental care personnel they have chosen. When you bring in your child for a dental visit with your Milford pediatric dentist, Dr. Quintner, much of the focus of the appointment will be based around building your child’s confidence with dental care. Additionally, these early visits allow parents to ask any questions they may have about caring for their children’s teeth.

Early Homecare for Your Child

Prior to the eruption of a tooth, you may clean your child’s gums with gauze or a soft washcloth. However, once more than one tooth erupts, look to buy an appropriately sized toothbrush for your little one. When brushing your child’s teeth, soak the small-bristled toothbrush in warm water and use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Gently clean every available surface (the front, back, and biting surfaces) of each tooth using small circular motions.

Fluoride Treatment for Children

As your child grows older, fluoride treatment can help strengthen his or her teeth against tooth decay. Fluoride alters the molecular structure of teeth to make them more resistant to the bacteria-produced acid responsible for tooth decay.
