Dental Sealants 101

There are few things more precious than your child’s smile, which is why we offer pediatric care to ensure your little one’s smile remains healthy and develops correctly. While it may ease your mind a bit to know that we keep an eye on your child’s teeth and gums and provide cleanings, you may wonder if there’s anything else you could be doing to protect your child’s oral health. Fortunately, we offer treatments like dental sealants to protect growing teeth from cavity formation. Happy to hear you are obviously in good company with other parents who want the best for the children’s teeth? Learn more about what you can expect from sealants with the following information:

About Sealants

A sealant is a barrier that will rest over the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth. It is composed of a thin layer of plastic that is visually undetectable to the untrained eye. We will be able to detect the sealants and monitor them but your child and his or her friends will not notice them. We will paint them on during an efficient, comfortable procedure. Once painted on, we will set them and your child can then enjoy many years of tooth decay protection.

How They Work

The dental sealant will coat the chewing surface of the back teeth that are particularly difficult for most children to reach and care for – these teeth are often difficult for adults to address, too. In addition to their location, they are full of fissures and grooves that act as excellent hiding spaces for plaque and food. Failing to thoroughly clean every part of each tooth greatly increases the likelihood of developing a cavity. By agreeing to sealants for your child, you are giving your son or daughter the gift of prevention that may last for up to five to 10 years. We will keep an eye on them to determine whether they require replacement along the way. Otherwise, they will wear away naturally.
