Milford Implant Dentist Discusses Gum Disease and Tooth Loss

Are you an adult suffering from tooth loss? Currently, the number one cause of tooth loss is gum disease. Suffering from tooth loss can lead to an array of problems, including jaw bone deterioration. Many patients even alter their diet to suit the changing conditions in their mouth. Your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner shares some basic ways to limit gum disease, and ensure a healthy smile.

Explaining Early Gum Disease

Currently, 75% of adults in America possess some form of gum disease. The disease is caused by oral bacteria found in plaque. Removable with a strong daily brushing and flossing regimen, plaque build-up can lead to more serious issues if left untreated. The three types of gum disease are gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis.

Gingivitis is the primary stage of disease. One of the tell-tale signs for gingivitis involves experiencing bleeding gums while brushing.  At the earliest stage of gum disease, the issues can be treated and reversed since no connective tissue or bone has suffered damage.

Advancing Stages of Gum Disease

Periodontitis and advanced periodontitis both result in damage which can’t be reversed. The bone supporting teeth are destroyed by the time advanced periodontitis sets in. By this point, teeth can begin to loosen. Advanced periodontitis can cause tooth loss. Replacing a lost tooth is possible with the use of dental implants. Implanting a titanium post into the jaw can prevent further deterioration and related issues. Dental implants provide an aesthetically pleasing solution to patients suffering from tooth loss.
