Curiously Chronic Bad Breath?

If you’ve ever had morning breath that lasted well beyond your morning, then you may be aware that bad breath can be rather embarrassing when interacting with other people. Knowing that your breath is foul can inhibit your confidence even when you’re not interacting with anybody. Today, we explain why bad breath sometimes has a tendency to linger, and where chronic bad breath often originates.

How Your Breath Grows Foul

  • Bacteria—You may already know that oral bacteria are responsible for two of the most destructive dental diseases. However, tooth decay and gum disease are not the only results of these microbes. Some oral bacteria release foul-smelling sulfur compounds that can drastically taint your breath, and they’re odor can’t be neutralized with a sugarless gum or sugarless mints. Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day and attending regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months are your best bets for controlling bad breath bacteria.
  • Dry mouth—The mouth microbes responsible for your bad breath are anaerobic, meaning they thrive without oxygen. When your mouth is dry and you don’t have enough oxygen-rich saliva, these germs can proliferate at a much higher rate within the dry climate of your mouth, increasing the speed with which they can foul your breath. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and facilitate a healthy saliva flow to increase your mouth’s natural defenses against germs.
  • Illnesses/medications—Some illnesses, like respiratory tract infections, can claim bad breath as a common side effect. Some medications, such as antidepressants, diuretics, and even aspirin, can also lead to dry mouth and foul breath. If your current medication is one of the causes of your bad breath, speak with your physician about finding a better alternative to your medications.
