Milford Dentist Explains Your Options for Repairing a Chipped Tooth

Teeth generally win when it comes to a battle with food. But what happens when they don’t and the tooth becomes chipped? The sight of a chipped tooth can detract from the best-looking of smiles and can immediately lower confidence and self-esteem. What, then, is to be done? Read below as your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner, discusses the cosmetic procedures that can repair a chipped tooth.

Procedures for Chipped Teeth

  1. Porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that attach to teeth in order to mask cosmetic blights. If one tooth or several teeth are damaged, porcelain veneers can hide the damage and create a new and immaculate smile. Porcelain veneers are noted for their strength and their resistance to stains, both of which contribute to long-lasting results, as well as their realistic appearance which includes a natural sheen and a level of translucence that mimics a living tooth.
  2. Dental bonding. Dental bonding uses a composite resin material (the same material used in white fillings) to repair the damage that a tooth has incurred. In order to repair a chipped tooth with dental bonding, your Milford cosmetic dentist, Dr. Quintner, will apply the resin to the tooth and sculpt it into the desired shape. Next, he will harden the resin with a curing light before smoothing and polishing the tooth.
  3. Dental crowns. When the damage in question threatens the structural integrity of a tooth, a dental crown can step in to reinforce the tooth and enhance it cosmetically. Depending upon the location of the tooth, a porcelain crown or a porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown may be necessary. All-porcelain crowns are widely recognized for their outstanding cosmetic results while PFM crowns offer a good blend of cosmetic appeal and strength. Thus, porcelain crowns are often chosen for restorations in the front of the mouth, and PFM crowns are chosen for restoration in the back of the mouth, where teeth experience greater strain.
