Milford Dentist Explains the Versatility of Dental Implants

Have you lost a tooth? Have you lost more than one? Tooth loss is not always uniform. Teeth may be lost in bunches or sporadically, in one single area or all over the mouth. Thankfully, dental implants are extremely versatile and are up to the task of restoring lost teeth in a variety of circumstances. To illustrate just how versatile dental implants are, your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner, is explaining how dental implants can be used to provide restorations in several different situations below.

Dental Implants and a Single Lost Tooth

One lost tooth can be the start of an avalanche of problems. It may trigger the domino effect (further tooth loss following the initial loss) or it could lead to a decrease in jawbone density and a deterioration in jaw health. Thankfully, however, a dental implant can replace the missing tooth and work against both of these complications. The implant can do this because the body recognizes the post of the implant as a tooth’s root and restores nutrition (which had ceased after the original tooth was lost) to the area. With nutrients flowing once again, the surrounding teeth are less likely to experience malnutrition, decreasing the likelihood of the domino effect. In addition, the implant’s post also enables it to transfer stimulating forces of biting and chewing to the bone cells in the jawbone, increasing bone density to improve jaw health.

Dental Implants and Several Lost Teeth

Depending upon the location of the lost teeth, the prosthetic used in the restoration can vary. If the teeth are all adjacent to one another, a dental bridge can fill the gap. If, however, the teeth are non-adjacent, a partial denture will be necessary. Regardless of the prosthetic, dental implants can act as anchors to keep the restoration firmly in place.

Dental Implants and Dentures

Denture wearers often complain that their dentures slide around their mouths causing embarrassment, irritation, and other difficulties. However, all of these problems can be solved with dental implants. By acting as anchors for the dentures, dental implants can reduce irritation and improve quality of life.
