COVID-19 Enhanced Safety Protocols

How Often Should You Attend a Dental Cleaning?

Are you always on top of scheduling your dental cleanings? If you are not, you may be taking a risk with your oral health. Just as you should brush and floss your teeth with regularity, so also should you attend a dental cleaning with your Milford dentists at least every six months. Dental cleanings are useful in that they allow a trained hygienist to clean your teeth, removing stubborn bacteria in the form of plaque and tartar to lower your risk of both gum disease and tooth decay. Tartar is especially troublesome because it cannot be removed with a toothbrush and dental floss. Thus, in order to preserve your oral health, you should not skip dental cleanings.

Is Six Months Ever Too Long?

In some cases, your Milford dentists may recommend that you attend dental cleanings more often than at six-month intervals. They may make this recommendation for a variety of reasons, one of which may be the presence of gum disease. Incurable and very damaging, gum disease must be managed carefully in order to prevent the deterioration of oral health. In an advanced form, the gums will detach from the teeth as harmful oral bacteria attack the ligaments and tissues that support teeth with the result that teeth will, loosen, shift, and eventually fall out if the bacteria responsible for the decay are not removed. In order to prevent further decay, you may receive a periodontal cleaning, which removes bacteria from beneath the gums and smoothes the surface of teeth’s roots to allow the gums to attach to the teeth once more.
