Your Dentists’ Tips for the Upcoming Flu Season

Typically, flu season is officially recognized as the months between October and May, but with recent spikes in various flu-like illnesses across the country, it’s never too early to prepare. To help you get ready and stay healthy, and protect your family’s health from the threat, as well, your Milford dentists at Sensitive Care offer these tips for preventing the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses this flu season.

Tips for Flu Prevention

The trouble with flu viruses is that they change and adapt, often making treatment more difficult than other illnesses. Prevention, then, is your best defense against influenza. These tips can help improve your chances of successful flu prevention.

  • Virus and bacteria often travel through touch, and we cannot always be aware of everything that our hands contact. Wash your hands often with antibacterial soap, and use paper towels to dry your hands. Restroom blow dryers can more easily transfer dangerous microbes.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. The germs on your hands can easily enter your body through these orifices.
  • If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with a tissue. Throw the tissue away afterwards.
  • Try your best to avoid close contact with others who are sick. Conversely, if you are sick, also try to avoid contact with others to avoid spreading the virus. The CDC recommends staying home for at least 24 hours after your fever has subsided except for necessities, like seeking medical attention.
  • If you exhibit a fever, cough, sore throat, sinus congestion, runny nose, body aches, headache, fatigue, or any other flu-like symptoms, see your physician immediately. If you are prescribed medicine, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
  • Be sure to receive your flu vaccination as soon as possible. Vaccinations target the three most common flu viruses and decrease your risk of developing the illness.
