Healthier Ways to a Brighter Smile

Teeth stains are a widespread nuisance, and can occur naturally for a number of different reasons. Because of the frequency of tooth stains, teeth-whitening is perhaps the most commonly requested cosmetic dental procedure today. Many toothpaste brands and other hygiene products advertise their benefits for whitening your teeth, and you can buy products specifically meant to brighten your smile in most pharmacies and grocery stores. However, there are also natural ways that you can help protect your smile from unsightly stains and perhaps avoid the need for chemical teeth-whitening.

Go Organic with Fruits & Veggies

Eating a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables is always good advice (assuming you aren’t allergic to any), but not many people are aware that some of them can help directly clean your teeth, especially the crunchy ones. Carrots, apples, celery, and others with similar fibrous textures act as miniature tooth cleaners that help scrub minor stains and food debris from your teeth’s surfaces. They also help generate a healthy flow of saliva, which is your mouth’s natural protection against bacteria and tooth stains. Green, leafy vegetables, like lettuce, are also good sources of calcium, which is essential to maintaining strong, healthy teeth.

Eat (and Drink) More Dairy

Strong tooth enamel is more stain-resistant than weaker enamel, and to remain strong, the protective outer layer of your teeth needs a healthy supply of calcium and phosphate. Since your body doesn’t produce calcium, you must ingest it through your diet, and dairy products like milk, cheese, and sugar-free yogurt provide an adequate supply of these and other important minerals.

Drink Water More Often

When you’re thirsty, you can often feel your mouth dry out before your body tells you it needs water. A dry mouth, though, can mean more trouble than just thirst. Your saliva is about 99% water, but the other 1% is comprised of important enzymes and antibacterial agents that ward off harmful microbes. Drinking plenty of water can keep your body hydrated enough to produce an ample supply of saliva, and keeping your mouth hydrated can make it more difficult for destructive oral bacteria to proliferate.
