Milford Family Dentist Shares Tips for Halloween

You have probably seen several candy displays by now for the upcoming holiday later this month. Halloween is approaching fast, and before it arrives, your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner, would like to share a few Halloween tips to ensure the continuing oral health of you and your family.

Halloween Tips for Healthy Teeth

  1. Be sure that you and your family brush your teeth at the conclusion of the evening. It would be a shame for children to miss out on the fun of trick-or-treating over the worry that sugar-filled candies can cause cavities. In the long run, having candy every once in a while does not present a significant threat to teeth. However, after consuming lots of sugar, it is important that you brush and floss your teeth. Sugar contributes to tooth decay by feeding harmful bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria consume the sugar and give off an acid byproduct that can damage teeth as a result. They can also attach themselves to teeth in the forms of plaque and tartar, positioning themselves to do sustained damage, so be sure that you brush and floss on the night of the 31st.
  2. Consider sugarfree snacks. Because sugar is a major contributor to the process of tooth decay, switching to sugar-free snacks is a great way to combat tooth decay without spoiling the holiday.
  3. Try to avoid leftover candy. Having a lot of candy on a single night is not likely to be the cause behind serious tooth decay. However, having candy and other sugar-laden foods habitually can affect oral health. Therefore, shoot for getting enough candy to enjoy the holiday, but not so much that you and your family will be snacking on it for several days or weeks afterward.
