Milford Dentist Explains How Root Canal Treatment Impacts Your Oral Health

Do you know the purpose behind a root canal or when one should be performed? Root canal treatment can play a significant role in restoring oral health, and it can even preserve a tooth that is in danger of being lost. To learn more about root canal treatment and its purpose, read the information below provided by your Milford dentist, Dr. Mitchell I. Quintner.

Why Root Canal Treatment Is Performed

Harmful bacteria in the mouth can cause a variety of problems. If they make their way beneath the gums, they can cause gum disease, and if they succeed in adhering to teeth in the forms of plaque or tartar, they can cause tooth decay. When tooth decay occurs, bacteria burrow into a tooth, creating a cavity. Once a cavity is discovered, a dental filling should be placed in order to stop decay and reinforce the tooth to prevent further damage. If a cavity is not treated, however, decay can worsen. Delving ever deeper into the tooth, unimpeded bacteria can access and infect the tooth’s pulp, putting the tooth in peril of dying and falling out. It is at this point that root canal treatment can intervene.

Root Canal Treatment: The Procedure

The goal of a root canal is to remove the infected pulp from the damaged tooth before filling it to prevent further decay. In order to do so, your Milford dentist, Dr. Quintner, will use a drill and other small instruments to gain access to the tooth’s pulp. He will then remove the infected pulp and fill the tooth. With the infection gone, the tooth’s structure can remain, although in some cases, a dental crown may be necessary to strengthen the tooth.
