Children’s Dentist: Could Candy Benefit Teeth?

As a parent, you probably watch your child’s candy intake carefully as your Milford children’s dentist recommends. You are well-aware, after all, of the effect that excess sugar consumption can have on the body and the mouth. But a newly developed candy could change our perspective on the effects of candy consumption. In addition to being sugar-free, this new confection created by a team research team in Germany contains good bacteria that are believed to prevent bad bacteria from attaching to teeth. Being unable to adhere to teeth, the harmful bacteria are then, in theory, washed away by saliva.

You may be wondering, however, whether this new candy actually fulfills its ambition of improving oral health. The results of the trial conducted by the team were very promising. After serving the candies in slightly altered forms to two groups and bacteria-free candies to a control group, the researchers found that almost 75% of the participants who consumed the bacteria-infused candies had “significantly lower” levels of harmful bacteria present in their saliva as compared to the levels present in the control group’s saliva. What a remarkable achievement and a milestone for oral health and hygiene!

Dental Cleanings and Homecare

The results achieved by the bacteria-infused candies are quite promising. Preventing harmful bacteria from attaching to teeth is a very important part of keeping teeth and the gums healthy. However, even if these sweets were to hit store shelves in the near future, regular dental visits and thorough homecare would retain their importance. Lowering the level of damaging bacteria in the mouth may reduce the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease, but without dental cleanings and thorough brushing and flossing, some bacteria would likely attach themselves to teeth, eventually forming tartar and attacking teeth without interference. Over time, cavities could develop and gum health might begin to decline.
